The Characteristics of Effective Learning are the ways in which a child learns.

Creating and Thinking Critically – Thinking Active Learning – Motivation Playing and Exploring – Engagement
Having their own ideas Being involved and concentrating Finding out and exploring
Making links Keeping trying Playing with what they know
Choosing ways to do things Enjoying achieving what they set out to do Being willing to ‘have a go’

Together, these underpin learning and development across all areas and support children to be effective and motivated learners.

We use the Characteristics of Effective Learning to plan the Nursery environment and activities in order to extend the children’s learning through play.

In Nursery, we link the Characteristics of Effective Learning with these stories, to promote a love of books and help the children relate their learning to familiar characters.
